Welcome to our October Newsletter.
I hope you all found your child’s report interesting. Could I please ask that the parent comment sheets are returned as these will be used for your child’s next report.
Jill is feeling a lot better and is hoping to make a gradual return to work
I was contacted by Runshaw college and asked if we could offer a placement to one of their students. The student started last week and is called Lily, she will be in nursery on a Thursday until February next year.
Monday the 28th October parents evening 6 pm to 8 pm there will be a time slot sheet located in the front hall and you can book a time slot to discuss any items that you want to or you can just drop in
Thursday the 31st is Halloween and the children can come dressed up all that week: 28th - 31st
We have been advised by a parent that she has had to apply head lice lotion to her child’s head three times now so she is quite concerned that her child is picking these up from another child or children whose parents are unaware that they have lice. So could all parents be vigilant and carefully check their child’s hair with a special comb and if you find any live lice treat not just your child but the whole family. Health & Safety of the children.
Following recent food hygiene training we would like to bring your attention to food items that are re-warmed. Apparently, it is not recommended that rice is re-warmed unless great care is taken, as the NHS says that leftover rice can be bad for you. Uncooked rice can contain spores that can survive when the rice is cooked. If the rice stands at room temperature for too long, those spores turn into bacteria that in turn can cause food poisoning. The only way to ensure that these bacterial spores are killed is to reheat the rice to an extremely high temperature. This would not be a problem to do, but to then get it to a temperature that a child can safely eat the rice has to stand and cool and this is when there could be a chance that the bacteria could again become active. So, could we please ask parents to consider this if they send rice in for us to reheat for your child’s lunch. Because of the chocking hazard presented by grapes (they are the perfect size to completely block a child’s windpipe) we have in the past asked parents to please cut the grapes lengthways into quarters to prevent the risks associated when your child eats these. Throughout these newsletters I will be explaining aspects of the governments statutory Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum that all nurseries have to work within, this curriculum extends to your child’s first year (reception year) in infant school. An important area of focus in the EYFS is Characteristics of Effective learning
Characteristics of Effective Learning (CoEL) advocate that in planning and guiding children’s activities, practitioners must reflect on the different ways that children learn, and then reflect these in their practice. A child’s individual learning characteristic will determine the way they respond to both the teaching and learning taking place in the environment. The three characteristics of effective teaching and learning identified by the EYFS are:
playing and exploring - children are involved they investigate and experience things, they are willing to have a go and enjoy achieving what they have set out to do.
active learning - children concentrate and are motivated. They keep on trying even if they encounter difficulties and they are proud of and enjoy their achievements.
creating and thinking critically - children have and develop their own ideas, they make links between ideas, they develop strategies and their own way of doing things. They self-select and play imaginatively, they make links and notice patterns in their experiences
When we observe the children, we are finding out and assessing what they like to do and if they enjoy certain aspects of play. This helps us to plan for their interests and makes learning more tailored to the child’s needs. Our planning always makes sure that activities are age appropriate so that children are not being set up to fail at something. It is far better to give them an easily accomplished task that gets progressively harder so that they can gain any new skills required slowly. Providing fun activities and experiences that reflect the child’s CoEL and interests will make this happen the children will learn more easily as they will be enjoying the experience. The focus of the CoEL is on how children learn rather than what they learn and children who receive the right sort of support, interactions and encouragement during these years will be creative, and adventurous learners throughout their lives. So, it is important for practitioners to ensure that the environment they provide, supports, nurtures and encourages these CoEL’s to occur. If you want to understand more about what we hope to observe as the children play so we know learning is taking place I have printed off a few sheets with explanations of these CoEL.

Our Mathematical focus this month will be:
Recognising numbers out of context (not in the correct order in a number line)
Positioning objects (on top, at the side, underneath, behind etc.)
Simple mathematical concepts (small, smaller, big, bigger, long, short etc)
