December 2019 Newsletter

Welcome to the last newsletter of 2019

Important Dates

Just a reminder we will remain open on Thursday the 12th December and will not be shutting for voting.

Our Christmas party is on Tuesday the 17th December. For children who do not do a Tuesday session they should arrive at nursery at 10.30 am and be picked up at 1 pm. For the children who usually attend on a Tuesday they will still do their normal hours.

Nursery will close on Friday the 20th December for two weeks and we will reopen on Monday the 6th January 2020


Nursery Items

We are finding that some of the children are reluctant to sit down at the table for their lunch, which makes this period very difficult for us. I know that in this modern day and age it is sometimes difficult for working parents to actually sit down as a family and all enjoy this time together, but the benefits of doing this are part of what OFSTED consider to be the British Values and cultural capital that builds your child’s future. It also would be extremely beneficial when your child starts school. So please if you don’t already sit down together sometime during the week consider introducing this into your family traditions and share some very memorable moments.   


Focus for the Month

The children are all making good progress within personal, social and emotional, physical and expressive arts and design developmental areas of the Early Years Foundation stage.

So, our focus will continue to be in mathematics and literacy. For the younger children: Number beginning to make comparisons between quantities and use the language of quantity i.e. more, lot, few, fewer EYFS 22-36 months and for Literacy: Repeats words and phrases from familiar stories EYFS 22-36 months

And the older children: Number Matching numerals and quantity in a set correctly EYFS 30-50 months and for Literacy: Describes the main story settings, events and principal characters EYFS 30-50 months

Understanding Your Child’s Development within the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum

You may have heard us talk about seeing your child display a schema. When we do what do we mean, schemas are described as patterns of repeated behaviour which allow children to explore and express developing ideas and thoughts through their play and exploration.  The repetitive actions of schematic play allow children to construct meaning in what they are doing. Babies and young children learn best through opportunities to engage in active learning through hands on experiences. These opportunities allow babies and children to problem solve, question, predict, imagine, speculate and develop independent choices as they make decisions in an area, they are familiar with.

It is important to understand that children use play to develop a methodical, systematic and logical collection of information through their senses and movements as they interact with practitioners, each other, objects and materials within the nursery environment.

The EYFS states that as practitioners we should identify and support children’s schematic play patterns so we can build on individual children’s interests and then further promote their development

Through a basic knowledge and understanding of children’s schemas practitioners will have a more in depth understanding of their observations of children, which can in turn support the assessing and planning for the children’s next steps in development. 

Being able to recognise schemas when they are exhibited enables us as practitioners to extend a child’s learning by matching our curriculum content to a child’s individual interests. Because the child is deeply interested in what they are experiencing, they will be very involved and continue to make good progress in their learning.


The most common schemas observed in Nursery:

  • Transporting
    Carrying in objects around in bags, prams, trucks or simply carrying things from one place to another.
  • Enclosure
    Putting things into boxes; enclosing animals in zoo cages; drawing boxes around pictures; hiding in dens.
  • Enveloping
    Wrapping toys in paper or sticky tape; wrapping themselves in fabric; dressing up
  • Rotational
    Spinning on the spot; objects that rotate, such as windmills and wheels; drawing circles.
